Best Kitchen Sink Christmas Cookies Recipe Substitutions and Variations

  • All-purpose flour: You can try using whole wheat pastry flour or even a gluten-free all-purpose blend for a slightly different texture.
  • Unsalted butter: If you dont have unsalted butter, using salted butter can work too. Just remember to cut back a tiny bit on the added salt in the recipe.
  • Granulated sugar: Coconut sugar can be a good alternative if you want a slightly richer flavor, though the texture might be a bit different.
  • Vanilla extract: You could swap vanilla for almond extract if you’re looking for a fun twist on the flavor.
  • Holiday sprinkles: If youre out of these, try colored sugar beads or even chopped candied fruit to keep things festive.

Pro Tips

• Be careful when mixing in the extra goodies like pretzel pieces and chips – you wanna fold them in gently so they don’t break apart or melt too much; too much stirring can ruin the texture.

• Don’t overmix the dough after adding the dry ingredients – if you do, the cookies might turn out tough. Mix until it’s just done and everything is evenly distributed.

• Keep an eye on the cookies in the oven because every oven is different. Check them a minute or two early to make sure they don’t overbake, especially since they’re meant to be soft in the middle.

• Let the cookies chill on the baking sheet for a few minutes after taking them out. This helps them set up before you transfer them to a cooling rack, so they’re less likely to break.
