Smoothies made from mango are a delightful way to turn a nutritious snack into something you can really savor. The natural sweetness of the ripe mangoes is one of my favorite parts of this concoction.

They also provide a good amount of vitamin A, but don’t think for a second that these are only good for you. Clear yogurt provides a protein boost and gives the smoothie a creamy base.

And while I am not much of a fan of orange juice, when it comes to smoothies, I believe it’s a must. The fresh-squeezed stuff (which you can also sub for clementine or tangerine juice) takes the smoothie to a whole other refreshing level.

FAQ

  • Can I use frozen mango instead of fresh?Frozen mango can definitely be used. It will result in a thicker and colder smoothie.
  • What can I use instead of Greek yogurt?Regular yogurt, coconut yogurt, or a plant-based alternative can replace Greek yogurt.
  • Is the honey or maple syrup necessary? No, the sweetener is optional. You can adjust the sweetness to your taste, or leave it out altogether if your mango is sweet enough.
  • Can I make this smoothie vegan?Yes, just switch to non-dairy milk and use a plant-based yogurt to make it vegan.
  • How can I add more protein to the smoothie?Adding a scoop of protein powder or a tablespoon of nut butter increases the protein content of your shake.
  • Will this keep in the fridge if I make it ahead? You can keep the smoothie in the refrigerator for a day at most, but it is a drink best enjoyed right out of the blender. If your smoothie has been sitting, it may have separated a little, so give it a good stir before consuming.

Mango Fruit Smoothie Recipe Substitutions and Variations

Coconut yogurt or almond yogurt can be used as a non-dairy substitute for Greek yogurt.
Substitute with pineapple or apple juice for fresh orange juice.
To replace milk (dairy or non-dairy): Use almond milk, coconut milk, or soy milk.
To procure natural sweetness in place of honey or maple syrup: Use agave nectar or a small, ripe banana as your stand-in for natural sweetness.
For ice cubes:
Use frozen mango chunks for added mango flavor and a thicker texture.

Pro Tips

1. Freeze the Mango Before making the smoothie, try freezing the chopped mango chunks. This will make your smoothie thicker and colder without diluting the flavor with too much ice.

2. Enhance the Citrus For an extra citrus kick, add a teaspoon of freshly grated orange zest along with the juice. It will intensify the flavor and provide a lovely aromatic touch.

3. Creamier Texture Substitute 1/4 of the yogurt with a ripe banana for a creamier texture and a naturally sweeter smoothie.

4. Superfood Boost Add a tablespoon of chia seeds or flaxseeds to the blender for an added nutritional boost of fiber and omega-3.

5. Spice it Up Add a pinch of ground cardamom or ginger for a subtle, exotic spiciness that complements the mango and orange.
